With the end of January approaching, many downtown Ottawa residents are feeling stressed and jumpy, recalling the trauma that afflicted them two years ago when the so-called “Freedom Convoy” made their lives a misery. They relive the horns, the fumes, the fires, the fear, the sense their community was occupied — and abandoned.
That concern has been further heightened by Tuesday’s federal court ruling that using the Emergencies Act to deal with the convoy was not justified. The judgement will be appealed, but whatever the final decision, the fact remains that Ottawa residents were failed first and foremost by local authorities.
